It is an Indian style of thread embroidery worked on light fabric. The patterns are usually florals, vines and fine jaali (net-like) work, often stitched in white or in a shade close to the fabric itself.

Chikankari is traditionally associated with Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh, and the style is now loved and worn across India.

Calm colours, delicate low-relief stitching and texture instead of shine. From a distance the garment looks simple; up close every motif shows.

Kurti sets, kurta-pant-dupatta sets, suit sets, sarees, dupattas and dresses are the most common.

For work, skip the dupatta and wear straight pants. For casual days, pair it with plazzo or jeans and flats. For festive days, choose a deeper colour and add jhumkas and juttis.

Pastels and whites work best for daytime functions, deeper shades like maroon, wine and bottle green for evenings and weddings, and light cotton-feel sets for everyday wear.

Wash separately in cold water the first time, use a mild detergent, dry it inside out away from harsh sun, and iron on the reverse so the hot plate never touches the thread work.
